The Town Center of Nuwara Eliya
Staying at Nuwara Eliya is the highlight of our trip in Sri Lanka. It is on the mountainous region with cool climate that gives the city a very different feel compare to the other parts of the country. It is blessed with lush vegetation, breath-taking views and picturesque landscape.
Nuwara Eliya is also known as “Little England” because of its colonial heritage and architecture. It is a common sight to see fairy tale cottages, red-bricked buildings and gardens. Tourists can feel the nostalgia of the colonial era through some of the landmarks. Many of its buildings keep the structure from the colonial period. Private homes also keep up their old English-style grasslands.
Touring the town center was enjoyable. It was easy and small enough to walk around. There are some interesting sights to see within the town itself. The town attractions include post office, parks, lake and golf course.
Nuwara Eliya Post Office
This is one of the oldest post offices in Sri Lanka. This is a favourite stop among tourists because it is just in the center of the town. The British constructed this brick Victorian post office in 1894. It is two-story, wherein the top floor is now developed into a holiday bungalow.
Victoria Park
Just nearby the post office is where the Victoria Park is. It is a lovely place to walk in, with beautiful variety of plants. Entrance fee is LKR 300 (~$2) per person for foreigners. The park was nice with spacious gardens. A lot of Sri Lankan people visit the park most of the days. So if you want to people watch, this is a great place. At the far end of the park, there’s also a small children’s playground with miniature train.
We enjoyed our time here because there were also a lot of spots for photo opportunities. We left the park during its closing time.
Lake Gregory Park
Located nearby the town center, Lake Gregory is an artificial lake at the bottom of the small hills, bordering the town of Nuwara Eliya. It is a picturesque tourist attraction offering a splendid and peaceful environment for sightseeing, fishing and boating. Entrance fee is LKR 100 (~$1) per person for foreigners. The park is also a cool place to hang out. The place was full of local tourists when we visited. But we had a nice stroll around the lake, watching people enjoying their time.
It was nice getting around the town center of Nuwara Eliya. It was easy for us to like this place because it was a pleasant destination with some tourist spots to enjoy. With its cool climate and interesting attractions, we definitely had fun exploring the town center.
