Surfing Baler

If what really makes me excited to go to Baler, then it’s surfing. Baler is said to be home to the country’s surfing community. It was a paradise for surfers because of its long shoreline facing the Pacific Ocean. According to wikipedia.com, surfing is a surface water sport in which the surfer rides a surfboard on the crest and face of a wave, which is carrying the surfer towards the shore. I’ve been yearning to try this water sport activity since I visited Bagasbas beach a year ago. It is another surfer’s haven situated in Camarines Norte.

Sabang beach is the surfer’s haven in Baler, Aurora. It can be reached in 5 minutes from the town proper.

We woke up at around lunch time with still feeling lazy to get up. But time is running out so I forcedly went off from my bed and prepared for our first activity in Baler. We took our lunch first in one of the carinderyas in the street.
Afterwards, we hailed a tricycle which took us to Sabang beach. Fare costs about PHP 30.00 for the trip.
It was a lovely day. The sun is shining and the waves are crashing. The beach is irresistable, deep inside I was so excited to embrace the waves. But since my friend doesn’t like to try surfing yet because of the scorching heat from the sun, we looked for a perfect spot to ponder and watch people. After getting bored from people-watching, we’ve decided to stroll and explore more of the beach.

Few minutes passed and I can’t resist the urge anymore. Watching people riding the waves, I felt envious and wanted to try surfing already.

We went to Baler Surf and inquired for the surfing rates. The beginner’s rate is PHP 350.00 including surf board and rash guard rental, instructor and 1 hour surfing.
Since my friend was still unready, we asked to be scheduled for a few minutes later.
Then time came, and we’re ready (and I’m excited) to try surfing. Each of us were given one instructor. By looking on their instructions for the proper guidelines of surfing, it looks more easy and simple than wakeboarding. But the thing is it’s in the open sea. One must know how to swim or good enough to save for his/her life when circumstances arise.

After the quick lesson on the basic guidelines for surfing, we took our surf board and headed to the sea along with our surfing instructors.
As soon as we got to our spot, my instructor told me to get ready. I don’t know what am I feeling that time but it’s a combination of excitement and nervousness. Excitement because of the adventure junkie I am and nervousness because of the thought of embarassment if I couldn’t stand up.

Well, I wasn’t able to stand on my first ride but I had learn the techniques from that failed attempt. So when I had my second shot of surfing, I focused and felt the waves. I was able to stand up and even kept on standing until I reached shoreline. It’s about balancing and feeling the water. Most of all, enjoying the moment and having fun. The experience riding the waves was so incredible. I can’t feel nothing but excitement and enjoyment. That’s when my addiction to surfing started. I would like to try it over and over again until I get tired doing it.

But one misfortune happened when I fell and had an injury on my knee. It was just a scratch, though. But despite of my injury, I still continue surfing the waves.
I would like to surf more but I got worried with my instructor. The sea level was rising. I supposed my instructor was already having a hard time guding me. He told me that the best time to try it was mid-morning wherein surfer can have a long ride through the waves because of the lower sea level.
Well I found a new water sport to be keen on, surfing! I even tried it for the second time before we left for Manila on our last day. #adiklang

But seriously, I fell in love with it. The night when I had my first surfing experience in Baler, I watched the movie Soul Surfer. The movie made me more inspired about life and surfing. Embracing my passion and continuously go on for my dream. Probably learn the next level surfing wherein I can enter the circling waves of the sea. 😉
